The Carole Stinson Literacy Foundation

Foundation Facts

The Carole Stinson Literacy Foundation was formed in June 2006. We are a charitable foundation dedicated to supporting organizations whose activities will enhance the literacy skills of children and adults. We also seek opportunities to provide public awareness about literacy issues.

After considerable research, the foundation unanimously chose to award annual grants to California program sites for the Reach Out and Read and Reading Recovery organizations. Grant awards ranging from $1000 to $10,000 will be presented to deserving sites each year. At this time, The Carole Stinson Literacy Foundation will present grants to Reach Out and Read and Reading Recovery sites operating in the California counties of Merced and Stanislaus.

Reach Out and Read is a national program providing new books to children during medical check-ups. Literacy issues are also discussed with the child's parent or caregiver during the visits. Many of the Reach Out and Read book recipients are living at or below the U.S. poverty level.

Reading Recovery is a worldwide early-intervention tutoring program for young children struggling with reading and writing. First grade students with literacy difficulties are given specialized Reading Recovery tutoring at participating schools.
